Archpriest Georgy Izvekov (1874-1937) was a gifted representative of the “New Russian Choral
School,” whose music remains largely unknown. In the course of fulfilling his pastoral duties, he
suffered repeated harassment from Communist authorities, several arrests, internal exile, and was
executed by firing squad in 1937. He is numbered among the sainted New Martyrs of Russia.
