This is a treasure-trove for all lovers of Byzantine chant in its traditional Athonite form. The selections from Holy Week are sung according to the manuscript compositions written by Vatopaidi composers Matthaios Ephesios (+1849) and Romanos of Vatopaidi (1889-1966), reflecting the vast melodic richness of the calophonic monastic chant: the Doxastichon of the Aposticha for Holy Friday Vespers lasts twenty-two-and-a-half minutes; other hymns last seven, eight, nine, and ten minutes apiece. CD contains title listings and introductory articles in Russian and English, but no text translations.
