The appeal of this classic recording (and its companion disc, B037) lies in the fact that it is a recording (somewhat abridged) of an actual service, and thus comes very close to capturing the "atmosphere" and "ethos" of this unique Orthodox Holy Week service. The London Cathedral Choir, under the capable hand of Fr. Michael Fortounatto, sings (in Church Slavonic) musically, tunefully, and with restraint. This makes them a fine model, worthy of emulation by Orthodox church choirs of all sizes and capabilities. There is a well-written explanation of the service (E only), but no text translations are included.--V. M.
