In 1990 a highly unusual choir was formed at the Cathedral of the Vladimir Icon in St. Petersburg—a children’s choir specializing in singing Byzantine Chant in Church Slavonic, thus acquainting a new generation of Russian churchgoers with the ancient heritage of the “mother Church” that originally brought Orthodox Christianity to Russia. The children’s singing on this CD is delightful in its tunefulness and freshness as well as its high technical accomplishment. The richly colored 108-page booklet contains a history of this unique choir as well as music (in Western notation) of all 23 selections featured on the disc. This is a disc that will be enjoyed by Orthodox listeners of many different ethnic backgrounds--whether Slavic, Greek, Arabic, or American--as well as by lovers of children’s choirs.--V. M.
