REVIEW
The monks of the Holy Trinity-St. Jonah monastery sing tunefully, with good ensemble, and, for the most part with good intonation. These, however, are not professional singers, which gives their renditions an air of simplicity and an extra measure of authenticity. They also avoid the dynamic excesses practiced by their brethren at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad (formerly known as Zagorsk). This CD presents a fine example of genuine monastic singing drawn from a tradition renowned for its beauty and melodic richness. The slim booklet gives accurate titles in English and some information about the music; complete text translations can be downloaded from: www.sourozh.clara.net. Proceeds from the sales of these discs go to benefit the International Orthodox Christian Charities. --V. M.
