REVIEW
Fresh, energetic, tuneful, well-blended, musical--liturgical! These are the words that come to mind in connection with this fine recording. The vocal and musical artistry of these four young Russian singers is obvious, but it doesn't call attention to itself, allowing our attention to focus on the beautiful Valaam Monastery Chant melodies, skillfully harmonized, for the most part, by Quartet member Igor Dmitriev and Deacon Sergei Trubachov, an important modern-day Russian church composer and chant arranger. The 40-number program offers a comprehensive "tour" of the major services and seasons of the Orthodox liturgical cycle--a great "value" on a single CD! The well-produced booklet offers accurate English translations of all the texts and notes about the performers and the Konevets Monastery, which is being restored with the proceeds from the sale of this recording.
