Most music lovers who know Rimsky-Korsakov by his orchestral works aren't even aware that he wrote choral music. This remarkable collection presents ALL 40 of Rimsky-Korsakov's sacred choral works written for the Russian Orthodox Church in a world premier recording! Rimsky's contribution to church music was both important and unique: important because of his stature as a composer and because he, along with Tchaikovsky, was among the first to use authentic church chants as a basis for choral arrangements; unique because he was practically the only Russian composer to use imitative counterpoint in his chant arrangements and composition. In terms of musical style and character, these works are more "liturgical" than "concert-style." The performance by the 16-voice Blagovest Ensemble of Moscow emphasizes this aspect of the music: the singing is well-tuned and balanced, without any unnecessary dramatics. There is an informative booklet, but unfortunately it is only in German; no text translations are given. One hopes that the American market will see more recordings such as this one, which present a comprehensive picture of a major composer's sacred choral output.
