REVIEW
In its latest release, Portland, Oregon-based Cappella Romana offers a rich variety of chants and polyphony by composers who lived and created at the time of the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Ottoman Turks. Expertly researched and beautifully sung, the selections transmit not only the music itself but also some of the acoustic spaciousness of how this music might have sounded under the domes of the Hagia Sophia Cathedral. Equally remarkable are the several motets by Western composer Guillaume Dufay, including one celebrating a royal marriage between a Greek prince and an Italian princess, and an especially poignant one, lameting the fall of the "Mother Church" of Constantinople, written shortly after the event. The accompanying booklet is a model of what an informative and educational CD insert should be.--V.M.
