REVIEW
This recording, originally made in 1988 and offered on CD for the first time ever, presents a complete "liturgical" rendition of Ippolitov-Ivanov's freely composed setting of the Divine Liturgy. The crystal-clear sound of the Kastalsky Chamber Choir reveals the prayerful, text-driven simplicity of the music, which shows Ippolitov-Ivanov to be follower of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov in terms of his liturgical choral style. Though eminently singable by a small ensemble, the music would be enriched even further by a larger choir. When originally recorded, this was the first performance of this Liturgy outside Russia, and to date, it remains the only available recording of this deserving work. The booklet contains a brief introductory note by the conductor and a listing of the titles in English, but no text translations.--V.M.
