REVIEW
The Valaam Male Vocal Ensemble has distinguished itself by the excellence of its vocal blend and the tightness of its harmonies. On this new CD they venture farther afield in terms of repertoire, including rarely-heard liturgical and concert works that are typically sung by much larger male choirs, as well as some brand new compositions by members of the ensemble that have not been heard previously. Among these, listeners will find some familiar works by Chesnokov, and Gretchaninoff, early znamenny and Georgian chants, and four works for male voices by the eminent Georgy Sviridov. The accompanying booklet has text translations and commentary in English.--V.M.
