REVIEW
This recording presents selections from the fifteen antiphons of Great and Holy Friday in the hauntingly beautiful 16th-century chant style of the Suprasl’ Monastery, as reconstructed by Russian musicologist Anatoly Konotop. (The present CD is a re-release of an earlier Russian release that is no longer available.) The solemn unison chants have been supplied here with a Byzantine-style ison (or drone), which serves to remind the listener of the fundamental aesthetic connection between Russian znamenny and Byzantine chant. The liner notes are by +Hilarion (Alfeyev), himself an ecclesiastical composer (see his St Matthew Passion, our cat. No. A122) and scholar, who is now Head of External Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate.
