REVIEW
The American Orthodox producer of this CD, Phil Bodrock, spent a period of time singing in Kyiv, Ukraine, at the Holy Trinity-St. Jonah Monastery and wanted to create a recording that would serve as both a souvenir of his stay there and a teaching tool. It was his good fortune (and ours) that the singers whom he asked to make this recording turned out to be an outstanding quartet of men's voices who regularly sing services together. They sing with excellent tuning and ensemble, and a wonderful sense of liturgical "ethos," as expressed within the tradition of harmonized singing developed at the Kievo-Pechersk Monastery. The result is a "Kyivan Liturgy" par excellence, sung in Ukrainian-inflected Church Slavonic. This CD will be enjoyed greatly by those who love the traditional sound of men's chorus liturgical singing as practiced from the 19th century to the present day, as well as by anyone who cannot attend church on Sunday and simply wants to hear a complete recording of a Liturgy. Since this was not intended to be a "commercial" release, there are no notes, only titles are given in English. Nevertheless, we are fortunate that Phil Bodrock chose to document his Kievan experience in this unique way, and thus enable us to be enriched by it.--V.M.
