REVIEW
Pavel Chesnokov has always been a favorite among lovers of Russian sacred choral music. As the notes to this CD (in Russian and English) inform us, his music was characterized by "sincerity and beauty," reflecting his lyric and romantic soul. He was also a master choral conductor, which gave him first-hand knowledge of what kind of writing sounded the best for various types of choral voices. Frequently he arranged his own works and those of his contemporaries, written originally for mixed voices, for male chorus. The Male Choir of St. Petersburg does a first-rate job interpreting the selections on this CD, which focus primarily on Chesnokov's "sacred arias" for various solo voices with choral accompaniment. The soloists themselves, selected from the chorus, are quite outstanding, which explains why the chorus overall has such a fine sound. They sing fully and richly, but with a good sense of measure, never exceeding the bounds of good taste and a well-mannered style. Altogether, this is a very "classy" CD, which will be enjoyed by all lovers of fine choral music.--V.M.
