AZEYEV, Evstafy Stepanovich (b. 23 February [7 March] 1851, Kiev; d. 1918, place of death unknown) — graduated from the Imperial Court Chapel; served as teacher of singing and conductor of the Chapel, taught conducting at the Chapel; later was choirmaster at the Mariinsky Theater. Composer of 88 known sacred compositions and arrangements of church chants, published by A. Gutheil, the Imperial Court Chapel, and privately; compiler and editor of numerous anthologies of church music, published by P. Kireyev, which included many of his works. Among Azeyev’s compositions, some are written in the style of Western polyphony, imitative and homophonic, while others approach Russian folk polyphony.
