The fine British choral ensemble Tenebrae offers a full CD of Russian choral masterpieces, all but one of which is available through the Musica Russica catalog. From the booklet liner we learn that the discovery of Russian choral music was somewhat of a personal quest for the conductor, Nigel Short, an interest that he translated into his sensitive music making on this album. What the chamber-sized ensemble may lack in sheer volume and power they make up for with an absolute clarity of sonority, impeccable intonation, and graceful phrasing, all of which are appropriate for the repertoire of the 'new Russian Choral School' of the early 20th century. The informative booklet contains information about the music and English text translations. At Musica Russica we welcome such "voyayes of discovery" (and courage) on the part of non-Russian performers, and we believe that once you hear it, you too will welcome this lovely CD into your musical collection.--V.M.
